A number of FICA contractor members were invited to attend an industry lunch with Minister McClay in Gisborne on 12 October. The event was hosted by the Eastland Wood Council, bringing together industry leaders to provide an update on the forestry sector in Tairāwhiti and discuss key issues affecting the region.
While FICA is not a member of the Eastland Wood Council, the invitation reflected the strong working relationship between the two organisations and the important role contractors play in the forestry supply chain. Representing the contractor sector were Angus from Kuru Contracting, Erika from Lumberjack Logging, and Ange and Wayne from Blackstump Logging.
The lunch provided an opportunity for contractors to share their firsthand experiences of operating in Tairāwhiti, including the challenges and opportunities facing harvesting, transport, and silviculture businesses. Discussions highlighted the critical role contractors play in maintaining forest productivity, supporting regional employment, and delivering safe and sustainable forestry operations.
FICA appreciates the willingness of the Minister and Eastland Wood Council to engage directly with contractors. These conversations are essential to ensuring government and industry decision-makers understand the realities of operating forestry businesses on the ground and the contribution contractors make to the success of New Zealand's forestry sector.
FICA thanks the Eastland Wood Council for extending the invitation and ensuring the contractor voice was represented at the table.
