Welcome to FICA’s first newsletter of the year. This month, we reflect on the challenges we’ve faced and look ahead to what’s coming. Recent weather events have significantly impacted parts of New Zealand, including my own hometown of Tauranga. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. Tairāwhiti has once again been hit hard, and we are proud of FICA members who stepped up without hesitation to support clean‑up efforts.
Windblow recovery in Tasman is progressing well thanks to a coordinated industry response. With additional capacity provided by FICA members, harvesting volumes have doubled. While this offers short‑term opportunity, we remain mindful of the longer‑term impacts expected early next year.
Log markets remain steady, with some improvement domestically. The late timing of Chinese New Year may influence AWG prices — see the PFO market report for more detail.
This month, FICA releases its revised strategy, shaped by member feedback. Our aim is simple: lift the value we deliver through stronger advocacy, sharper resources, and more meaningful engagement.
I’m looking forward to visiting the regions in March as part of the vocational training consultation and catching up with many of you.
