FICA Enewsletter - December 2025

As the year draws to a close, we want to pause and celebrate the people who make our industry strong. 2025 has tested us, and margin squeeze has dominated discussions.

Rising costs and compliance have collided with returns that remain stubbornly low. This challenge has been front and centre in our costing workshops, where we’ve begun building shared understanding between contractors and forest managers. Transparency is the first step toward restoring balance.

Markets have added to the pressure. Export prices have been low but stable throughout the year, offering little relief. At the same time, crews have had to contend with major windblow events in Tasman, Southland and Canterbury, which created salvage pressures and stretched capacity.

On the domestic side, mill closures in Tokoroa and Eves Valley have reduced processing outlets, compounding the challenge of keeping supply chains viable. Yet despite these headwinds, harvesting production has held up strongly—a testament to the professionalism and determination of the industry.

2025 has also shown the power of contractors, crews and communities working together. We’ve made strong progress: the launch of the new Forestry ACOP, development of the Pan Sector Health & Safety Charter, recognition of the Silviculture Operator role to stabilise workforce visas and securing contractor representation in forestry research. These wins matter—but they only have impact if contractors remain viable.

Looking ahead, we are beginning to see green shoots in the domestic economy. Housing consents are lifting, business confidence has rebounded, and there are signs of modest recovery in construction activity. For FICA, the New Year will see a reviewed strategy and business plan that builds on this year’s lessons and member feedback.

I'd like to thank you all for your hard work, your trust, and your voice throughout 2025. This holiday season, take pride in what we’ve achieved, enjoy time with family, and recharge for the year ahead. Merry Christmas! Stay safe, enjoy time with family, and let’s tackle the margin squeeze together in 2026.
