Safetree Conference: Growing our Culture
Thursday 28 October 2021, Millennium Hotel, Queenstown
FISC and FICA are again proud to partner to support the success of our forestry companies and the health and wellbeing of our foresters.
It’s time to shift to the next level of thinking and to take our people with us.
We see leadership and communication as the essential skills to make a significant change in performance. These skills assist greatly in developing functional relationships in teams and across the supply chain, ultimately improving both business and health and safety outcomes.
This year our speakers will give you a different take on these skills and our industry participants will tell you how engaging with their people and developing these skills has changed their businesses for the better.
We welcome anyone associated to our industry to attend this day and also highlight that this conference day leads onto the FICA AGM and Conference in Queenstown over the following two days so check that programme out here.
Format will be key note speakers in the morning:
Keynote speaker – Nigel Latta
Safe and Healthy: The psychology of effective workplace practices
VIP Speaker – Callum McKirdy
Lance Burdett, Shelly Davies,
The conference brings a number of key speakers with solutions and tools to reduce these challenges that are faced every day.
There will be opportunity for delegates to check out products and equipment at the Trade Display area during the breaks. Network opportunities will present throughout the day and conference will finish with a cocktail hour and dinner.

Following a successful career as a construction manager, Lance Burdett spent 22 years as a cop, 13 of those as a crisis negotiator.
With plenty of practical experience and academic qualifications, Lance published two bestselling books – Behind The Tape and Dark Side of the Brain and makes regular media appearances. He brings together experience from training in New Zealand, Australia, England and the USA with the elite units of police, prisons, emergency services, the military, and the FBI.
His programmes are grounded in neuroscience, emotional intelligence, and positive psychology.
2.10pm Shelly Davies
Shelly stands as one of New Zealand’s go-to deliverers of business and technical writing training. With a rockin' brand, weird photos, and 2 generations of offspring, (WTF!), ShellyDavies.com. has been teaching business people how to be more concise, more effective, and more efficient in their communications for 9 years, and winning awards along the way!
Shelly does words!!! Words for scientists, engineers, tech-geeks, and even numpties like the rest of us. If you need to use words to transmit information and you want to do it quickly and effectively, she's your girl. But boy, those engineers and government departments don’t realise what they’re going to get once Shelly’s in the room.
What they get is a lot of UNTRAINING – undoing all of the bad habits they picked up at university and through their careers. With hashtags like #writelikeahuman and #authenticitywins, Shelly encourages research-based approaches to writing in more authentic ways, with a natural voice that increases confidence and trust.
3.30pm Alicia McKay
Alicia McKay is New Zealand’s straight talking strategist. With no buzzwords, and no bullshit,
Alicia supports teams and leaders to think differently about change, strategy and the future. Author of two books and co-host of popular What’s On Your Mind? Podcast, Alicia reaches global audiences with her frank, fresh approach to making decisions and getting shit done.
